Editorial appointments

How editors and editorial board members are chosen: open calls, criteria, terms and conflicts of interest.

Editors and editorial board members of the journals on Mjournals are appointed through open calls. This page explains how a call is run and how we decide.

Open calls

Each open position is announced on our Get involved page. The call states the role, the subject area, the responsibilities, the time the role needs and the closing date. Anyone may apply; you sign in with your e-mail address or ORCID and send a short statement and your CV.

Who decides

The journal's Editor-in-Chief reviews the applications and makes the appointment, consulting the editorial board where helpful. Editors-in-Chief are appointed by the publisher. We reply to every applicant, usually within four weeks of the closing date.

What we look for

  • Expertise in the subject area of the call.
  • A research and publication record in the field.
  • Experience as a reviewer or editor; for board roles, a record of careful reviews counts.
  • Time to do the role well, as described in the call.
  • A commitment to publication ethics and to fair, constructive review.

Equal opportunity

We welcome applications regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, disability or career stage. We aim for editorial boards that bring together colleagues from different countries and institutions, and we review the make-up of each board once a year.

No fees

We never charge for applying, for joining an editorial board or for reviewing. If you receive a message asking for payment in our name, please do not pay and report it to contact@mjournals.org.

Term

Appointments are for three years and can be renewed. Members who can no longer give the role the time it needs may step down at any time.

Conflicts of interest

Editors do not handle manuscripts from their own institution, from close collaborators or from anyone with whom they have a conflict of interest; another editor handles them. Manuscripts submitted by an editor of the journal are handled by a different editor and reviewed like any other. We follow the guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Your application

Your statement and CV are seen only by the journal's Editor-in-Chief and the platform administrators. Applications that do not lead to an appointment are deleted twelve months after the call closes.
